A common question we receive from our customers is: How much power does the SY62 use while cruising? Based on a battery capacity of 286 kWh and a solar array of 16.8 kW peak, here are the power usage details:
- Cruising at 5 knots uses 20 kW per hour
- Cruising at 6 knots uses 30 kW per hour
- Cruising at 7 knots uses 40 kW per hour
- Cruising at a maximum speed of 12 knots uses 280 kW per hour.
Solar gain assumptions
Based on actual data from the Mediterranean in May and June 2024, a 16.8 kW peak solar array provides an average of 8 kW per hour over 10 hours, equating to a gain of 80 kW per day. Power consumption onboard when not underway is likely to be between 2.5 kW per hour and 7.5 kW per hour, depending on how the power is managed on board. Using an average of 5 kW per hour results in a daily usage of 120 kW over a 24-hour period. Based on using 120 kW of power and a solar gain of 80 kW, the net deficit would be 40 kW. However, many owners manage to reduce this deficit to nearly zero.
A typical day on board a SY62
Most days on board a SY62 involve 2-3 hours of cruising, followed by anchoring or securing a mooring buoy.
Cruising for 3 hours at 6 knots would consume 80 kW of battery power, while cruising at 5 knots would reduce consumption to 60 kW. Starting with a 285-kWh battery, after 3 hours of cruising at 5 knots, the battery reserve would be at 225 kWh, assuming the solar array provides the power for the yacht’s domestic needs.
When moored in a marina for an extended period, there is no need for shore power as the solar arrays will maintain the batteries and cover minimal power consumption.
