Living on a SY62 Solar Electric yacht

A common question we receive from our customers is: How much power does the SY62 use while cruising? Based on a battery capacity of 286 kWh and a solar array of 16.8 kW peak, here are the power usage details:

  • Cruising at 5 knots uses 20 kW per hour
  • Cruising at 6 knots uses 30 kW per hour
  • Cruising at 7 knots uses 40 kW per hour
  • Cruising at a maximum speed of 12 knots uses 280 kW per hour.

Solar gain assumptions

Based on actual data from the Mediterranean in May and June 2024, a 16.8 kW peak solar array provides an average of 8 kW per hour over 10 hours, equating to a gain of 80 kW per day. Power consumption onboard when not underway is likely to be between 2.5 kW per hour and 7.5 kW per hour, depending on how the power is managed on board. Using an average of 5 kW per hour results in a daily usage of 120 kW over a 24-hour period. Based on using 120 kW of power and a solar gain of 80 kW, the net deficit would be 40 kW. However, many owners manage to reduce this deficit to nearly zero.

A typical day on board a SY62

Most days on board a SY62 involve 2-3 hours of cruising, followed by anchoring or securing a mooring buoy.

Cruising for 3 hours at 6 knots would consume 80 kW of battery power, while cruising at 5 knots would reduce consumption to 60 kW. Starting with a 285-kWh battery, after 3 hours of cruising at 5 knots, the battery reserve would be at 225 kWh, assuming the solar array provides the power for the yacht’s domestic needs.

When moored in a marina for an extended period, there is no need for shore power as the solar arrays will maintain the batteries and cover minimal power consumption.

Recharging the batteries

The onboard diesel range extender is designed to quickly recharge the batteries when additional power is needed, during poor weather conditions, or for extended cruising or passage making. This 140-kW peak generator can fully recharge the batteries in less than 3 hours.

High-speed operations

If necessary, the SY62 can travel at 12 knots to avoid adverse weather or meet a deadline. At 10 knots, the power consumption is 200 kW, requiring the use of the diesel range extender to maintain battery levels. The range extender is programmable to adjust its output to match the motor’s consumption.

In synthesis

The SY62 is ideally suited for leisurely cruising, where most itineraries involve 5-10 miles of travel to different bays, islands, or anchorages. With careful management of domestic power, you can achieve total autonomy, relying solely on solar power and eliminating the need to use the range extender.

The SY62 Solar Electric Yacht offers a perfect blend of efficiency, sustainability, and autonomy for leisurely cruising. Its powerful solar array and smart power management make it ideal for both short trips and longer voyages. Enjoy an eco-friendly yachting experience, whether at anchor or on the move.
